Last week we had the honour of welcoming His Majesty’s Lord‑Lieutenant of the West Midlands, Derrick Anderson CBE, to YMCA Heart of England for a powerful and deeply human fireside conversation.
Derrick reminded us that true leadership begins with humility — “I am Derrick first” — and shared moving reflections on resilience, purpose, justice, and the fierce lineage that shaped him. From childhood experiences that sparked his awareness of inequality, to the Maroon heritage that taught him strength, to the FRESH values that guide his life, his insight resonated with our staff and residents alike.
His message was clear: purpose is discovered, not imposed. Growth is lifelong. And service — grounded in fairness, respect and honesty — is at the heart of community.

Celebrating Pancake Day with our residents at YMCA Heart of England 🥞

Shrove Tuesday marks the beginning of Lent — a season traditionally associated with reflection and renewal. Historically, Pancake Day was a way to use up rich ingredients before the Lenten period of fasting.

For our residents, this celebration was an opportunity to come together, build connections, and create positive shared experiences within a supportive community environment.

Moments like these highlight how meaningful, simple activities can strengthen wellbeing, belonging, and community spirit.

Wishing everyone a joyful St David’s Day as we celebrate Welsh culture, community and kindness—values that align closely with everything we do at YMCA.

You are invited to a joint prayer meeting to pray

You are invited to a joint prayer meeting to pray for the work of: The YMCA; Coventry Youth for Christ; The Light House; Coventry City Mission and Christians against Poverty, Christian organisations seeking to serve targeted and marginalised communities, and to share the gospel, whether in word or in action, through the work done in Coventry.

We will gather at QRBC (parking off Grosvenor Road) to pray for the organisations and their specific needs, using prayer stations based around ways of praying. The stations will be a mix of creative ways to engage in prayer, individual, and group prayer.

We have chosen to organise stations in this way, rather than having stations for individual organisations to increase broader awareness of the work and needs of organisations with which you may not already be familiar, and to encourage further unity in prayer.

We’re hoping it will be a valuable and enjoyable evening, and we look forward to seeing you there!
