Following Volunteers Week, YMCA Heart of England is proud to reflect on the inspiring contributions of our young volunteers who continue to strengthen communities.
One standout story is that of R., who first arrived at YMCA Heart of England as a resident in late 2021 and has since grown into a dedicated volunteer at our local Youth Club, as well as a YMCA England & Wales Youth Ambassador. R. has generously shared his journey, highlighting how support during tough times can lead to confidence, purpose, and a desire to give back.
Before YMCA: The Challenges Faced
In late 2021, R’s life took a difficult turn following a serious argument with his family about his future. As R. shared:
“At the time, I felt that my voice was not being heard, and the situation escalated into a violent confrontation on both sides. As a result, I was made legally homeless.”
R. was working in a bar on minimum wage when he moved into YMCA accommodation in late 2021—the day before his 19th birthday. After leaving his job due to personal struggles, he was given the opportunity to take part in an art project at Warwick University, which helped him express his experiences creatively.
When the project ended, he looked for something positive to focus his energy on and approached his support worker about volunteering opportunities. This marked the beginning of his journey as a volunteer at the YMCA Youth Club, which later led to further opportunities at a national level within the YMCA community.
As R. explained:
“At first, volunteering was simply a way to occupy my time. However, after spending time with the young people at the youth club, my perspective changed. I began to see parts of myself in some of the children. Many were dealing with the same feelings of frustration, anger, and confusion that I had experienced at their age. My goal shifted from simply helping out to trying to pass on the coping strategies and life lessons I had learned — things I wish I had known when I was younger. I wanted to help them build brighter futures for themselves.”
“In 2026, I was nominated to become a Youth Ambassador for YMCA England & Wales. It was a great honour to be considered for the role, as it gave me the opportunity to represent the voices of young people, express the frustrations many in my generation feel, and hopefully contribute to positive change. Looking back, YMCA provided me with far more than accommodation; it gave me opportunities, purpose, and a chance to turn a difficult period of my life into something meaningful.”
How YMCA Helped R. Overcome Barriers
YMCA Heart of England played a transformative role in R’s life. As he explained:
“YMCA helped me massively to come out of my shell, grow in confidence, and become wiser with age. It gave me opportunities to express my voice in ways I never thought possible. For the first time in my life, I felt that my opinions mattered and that people genuinely listened to my ideas and suggestions.”
The support he received gave him a strong sense of purpose, R. continued:
“Perhaps most importantly, YMCA gave me a sense of purpose and something meaningful to strive towards. Through the opportunities I was given, I discovered a passion for helping others and contributing to my community. It showed me that even small actions can make a difference… YMCA helped me realise that we can always work towards making the world a little better.”
YMCA Services R. Engaged With
R. first engaged with YMCA Heart of England through its residential accommodation service, which provided him with a safe and stable place to live during a very difficult time. Initially introverted and reserved, he gradually opened up with the gentle encouragement of support workers, who show up every day for our residents.
“The biggest positive impact on my experience at YMCA has been the people who keep the organisation running every day. From the staff and key workers to the volunteers, I have always been surrounded by people who genuinely care about helping others. Their kindness, patience, and willingness to listen helped me feel valued and supported during a challenging period of my life. They not only provided practical support but also encouraged me to grow in confidence and take advantage of opportunities that I may not have considered otherwise.”
Here at YMCA Heart of England, we are proud of our caring and supportive culture, where staff and volunteers go beyond providing accommodation to offer genuine mentorship, encouragement, and a listening ear. This holistic approach helps young people feel truly seen and supported during challenging times.
Beyond housing, the organisation offers a range of social and recreational activities, helping residents step outside their comfort zones. These opportunities allowed R. to connect with others facing similar challenges, leading to lasting friendships and a growing sense of community.
Through this gradual engagement, R. moved from being a resident to becoming an active member of the wider YMCA community—building his confidence and laying the foundation for his volunteering journey.
Over time, he became deeply involved in community work and volunteering. R described his journey in the following words:
“My journey with YMCA began with receiving support, but it has grown into an opportunity to support others and give back to my community… Through my work with young people, I have tried to encourage them, support them, and help them develop the confidence and resilience they will need in the future.”
R’s Goals for the Future
R. is now focused on continuing to make a difference and helping to create a better future for the next generation. As he shared:
“My goal is not to see immediate rewards for my efforts, but to help create a future where the next generation has more opportunities and support than I did. If I can play even a small part in that, I will consider it worthwhile.”
R’s journey—from a young man facing homelessness and family conflict to a confident Youth Ambassador and dedicated youth club volunteer—is a powerful example of the lasting impact of YMCA Heart of England’s work in the community. His story demonstrates how one organisation can provide not just a home, but also purpose, connection, and the opportunity to give back.
