Youth-led support in clinics, schools & the community, empowering 11–17s across Coventry and Rugby.
This new pilot programme, funded by the ICB and delivered in partnership with YMCA Heart of England, brings youth work into the paediatric diabetes teams at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire and St Cross Hospital, Rugby. It supports young people aged 11–17 living with Type 1 diabetes in Coventry and Rugby—offering support in clinics, schools, and the community.
The aim is simple: help more young people engage with their care, improve the move to adult services, and tackle health inequalities—especially in areas where outcomes are poorer.
Richard Hitchins is the Youth Worker on the team. He’s available during clinics to offer informal support, signposting, one-to-one chats, and to link young people with events and activities. Richard also visits young people on the ward—whether newly diagnosed or admitted due to complications—to offer a chance to talk and ask questions outside of a medical setting.
